Analogue
A watch that shows the time using an hour and minute hand.
Automatic
The movements or accelerations of the wearer’s arm wind the mainspring.
Bezel
Also called Top Ring. The ring that surrounds the watch dial or face. The Bezel is usually made of metal blends (such as stainless steel), base metals or plated metals.
Bands
A mesh or titanium strap used to attach the watch to the wrist of the wearer. Bands made of rubber or leather are referred to as straps.
Case
The housing which contains the movement and other watch parts. Skagen uses solid stainless steel or 100% titanium cases.
Chronograph
A characteristic specifying that it has the built-in functions of a stopwatch.
Colored Glass
A polished mineral glass that is mixed with a pigment dye as it is melted down from silicon resulting in a highly transparent colored glass.
Crown
Round knob that is located on the outside of a watch case used for setting the hands to the correct time and correcting the calendar indications.
Dial
“Face” Plate of metal or other material bearing various markings to show the hours, minutes and often, the seconds. Dials vary in shape, decoration, materials, etc. The indications are given by means of numerals, division or symbols of various types.
Dual Time
A feature that has two time zones.
Glass/Crystal
A polished mineral glass crystal material that protects the watch dial.
Indicators
Also called markings, this refers to the hour, minute or second marks that are printed on the face of the dial.
Ion Plating
A physical vapor deposition technique form metal coatings on metal and alloys.
Jewel
A tiny synthetic gem crystals set between the gears of a movement to reduce friction.
MOP
Mother of Pearl is an iridescent, milky interior shell of a mollusk that is sliced thin and used on a watch dial. While most have a milky white luster, mother-of-pearl is also available in pink, blue, brown or black.
Movement
Assembly consisting of the principal elements and mechanisms of a watch or clock: The winding and setting mechanism, the mainspring, etc. Skagen uses precision Japanese or Swiss quartz movements and does not need winding.
Multifunction
A watch containing sub dials used for various purposes such as determining time, date, day of the week and hour. All operations are controlled with a single crown.
Pusher
Any button that operates the special functions of a watch.
Screw Down Crown
A crown which aids water resistance by sealing the crown against the case. Turn crown Crown counter clockwise to unscrew from case. Press and hold in crown while turning clockwise to seal the crown to the case.
Spring Bar
The pin that connects the band or strap to the watch case.
Steel
(316L) High grade steel with low nickel content. Often referred to as surgical steel.
Straps
Watchbands made of pliable material such as genuine leather.
Titanium
Titanium is a metallic element found in the earth’s crust, it occurs as a bright, lustrous metal or a silver-grey or dark grey powder. It is 30% stronger than steel yet lightweight, resistant to salt water corrosion and is well known for its anti-allergenic properties.
Top Ring
Also called Bezel. The ring that surrounds the watch dial or face. The Bezel is usually made of metal blends (such as stainless steel), base metals or plated metals.
Water Resistant
Made to prevent water from entering the watch.
